FEED ME NOW, I'M STARVIN'! (Little shop of Horrors)

Persistent, aren't we?

Too many "visitors" to this site ask for "more links, please." I only have one life, and, the older I get, the shorter it is. I should've officially shut down August 17, 2004, but I've been granted some extra time.

"Feed the birds, tu' pence a day" (Mary Poppins)

Here's how to feed yourself:

ALWAYS save "links" pages to an additional "misc (research, downloads, etc.)" directory, when doing searches. You'll build up a rather large database of links to research from. Remember, be organized. Even create a "Favorites Folder" named "Links, or Science, or Research, etc."

ALWAYS save the good pages. Soon, they won't be there, anymore. Trust me, from experience.. You'll still have them, after they've disappeared!

EXPECTATIONS:

DON'T expect others to do your research. EXPECT others to ask you to do their research. DON'T expect others to reply to your inquiries. EXPECT others to inquire of you. I'm not being a pessimist, only a realist. The true "communicators" are few, and far between.

You'll find other peoples research helpful, but your own research more rewarding (oops, gratifying). DON'T expect to get rich from your research..

BACKUP!

Backup your "Favorites, Links, Research, Images, PDF's, Movies" folders to another disk drive. Yep, "another" disk drive, in case of the "big crash." I currently use a USB Hard Drive. You can get a 3.5" case at Fry's Superstore, and put an older 3.5" 60gb hd in it for "cheap" back-up security. USB 2.0 is fast. FireWire is better. This beats the cost of CD discs.

SEARCH ENGINES:

Big Brother is monitoring "Google." Well, O.K, I don't "Google" anyway. I "Yahoo." I find "surfing" easier from Yahoo, as they have the little "open new page" symbol just to the right of the search link (two little pages, stuck together). This method retains the original search, while allowing me to go off on tangent searches. This saves me A LOT of time. The second search engine I use is "Excite." This usually expands my search results by 10 more good hits. You'll have to "right-click" open to new web pages from here, and all other search engines.

Gee, where do you find good search engines? Try entering "search engines" at Yahoo!

http://www.yahoo.com/ YAHOO, http://excite.com/ EXCITE!, http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm USPTO Patent Search.

When searching, use "key words." I.E., pdf, gif, mov, article, diagram, animated, wav, patent, faqs, to name a few. For instance, if you want to search for Perpetual Motion Machines, try this as your search "perpetual motor diagram." This works at Yahoo, but may turn up fewer results at other search engines. Keep a "Favorites" folder named "Search Engines." Be organized. Have other "Favorite Folders" named "Science, Drivers, JAVA, Music, Bible," etc., with appropriate sub-folders. Remember, be organized.

ALWAYS use a SPAM blocker program to prevent "pop-ups" from taking over and destroying your computer. You can find free pop-up blockers at DOWNLOAD.COM. http://www.download.com/

CLEAN-UP:

Hard day of surfing the internet? Don't forget to go to "Tools, Internet Options" and "delete Cookies and Files, and Clear History." Keep as much useful HD storage space as possible.

Use a "Registry Cleaner" regularly. ALWAYS use a virus protection program (like AVG free (by GrisSoft, or House Call (by Trend Micro) on-line free. Use Ad Aware or another "add detector/remover" program, regularly.

SAVING PAGES:

From a "favorite site," go to "file, Save As." First, save the page as "web page, complete." Then, save the page AGAIN, in the new sub-directory it created (the one with the name of the page on it) and SAVE IT AGAIN. This time, "Save As"  "web page ONLY" (center drop down menu: .htm or .html tag). The reason for doing this is two-fold: you'll have all the "images" from the site and you'll have a clean page to edit later, with Microsoft FrontPage, Word, Outlook Express, or other appropriate program.

You don't want all the SPAM ads on that site? Try using your e-mail "new message" to save portions of that web site page. "Cut 'N Paste" portions of that site to your "new message" e-mail page. This works great for those "protected" pictures and images. Don't forget to save "all the images you can" from that web page.

ALWAYS use a SPAM blocker program to prevent "pop-ups" from taking over and destroying your computer. You can find free pop-up blockers at DOWNLOAD.COM. http://www.download.com/

EDITING WEB PAGES:

(See above "Saving Pages," first.) Learn how to "edit" web pages using Microsoft FrontPage, Word, Outlook Express, or other appropriate program. The easiest editors include WYSIWYG editing. The better programs include HTML mark-up viewing. The best editors allow for newer "JAVA SCRIPT" or the latest animation scripts. Also, "Cut 'N Paste" editors are VERY helpful.

Get a "free" editor, if you like. I prefer the not-so-free type: FrontPage.

Free Editors:

WYSIWYG Web Builder 3.1 , TinyMCE JavaScript WYSIWYG Editor 1.45RC1 , WYSIWYG HTML Editor 1 , Cool Page 2.72 found at http://www.download.com/ DOWNLOAD.COM.

Sorry, I don't have time to teach the use of "editors" here.
