Back in the 70’s…. whoa, time machine…. go back to the 80’s! I remember getting a device from my friend, James, that he claimed would help the deaf to hear. This was built by a friend of his, Patrick Flanigan, called the Neurophone. It didn’t generate very much audio on my neck, so I modified it…
Instead of the hand wound, epoxy filled speakers that came with it, I used a couple of Christmas card speakers, called transducers, or piezoelectric speakers. By holding the speakers to the side of my throat, just below my ears, I found I could now “hear” with something other than my ears.
The hearing frequency was up in the 14khz range, so some filtering would be necessary to the lower frequencies.
Heck, the transducers were “free” at the surplus store, down the street, compared to the $350 you might spend on the Neurophone. It’s worth a try, if you know of someone born without eardrums. Let me know if you have success with this.
I also tried the transducers on the output of my transistor radio and I could hear music through the side of my throat. I got a feeling of “gurgling” in the side of my throat. I suppose that was auditory stimulation of the nerves.
